One of Tetch's latest plans consisted of implanting his devices in 'free coffee and donuts' tickets he handed out in front of the police stations in Gotham. Batman arrives and dispatches the Mad Hatter and his goons. Meanwhile he invites a number of criminals including Film Freak, the forces them at gunpoint to put on his special hats which puts them under his control. He next shoots up a hat shop and leaves an invitation for Batman to come to his tea party. His first act is having his monkey grab Talon, Bird's falcon and planting a tracking device on its leg. The young Robin managed to defeat the Mad Hatter, however.ĭuring the Knightfall story line, Tetch was broken out of Arkham Asylum (along with numerous other inmates) by Bane.

In Robin: Year One, Tetch devised a plan to implant his mind control devices in portable tape players, which he gave out to young girls at Dick Grayson's school in order to sell the young girls to millionaire third-world dictator Generalissimo Lee. Once again, Tetch was stopped by Batman, but not before using his advanced equipment to feed information from Fox's mind into his computer. Tetch has even kidnapped Lucius Fox of Wayne Enterprises and held him for ransom. Tetch seemed to have died under the wheels of a train, but that turned out to have been another trick. He even managed to slip one into Scarecrow's hat and take control of him for a short time. It was in 1983's Detective Comics #526 that Tetch was first portrayed with the mind-controlling devices for which he is now best known. Tetch claimed to have killed his impostor, but that turned out to be untrue when the impostor returned one last time in Detective Comics #573 in 1987. Tetch appeared with a pet monkey, as well as a mind-erasing machine. The real Jervis Tetch reappeared in Detective Comics #510 in 1981. Later a very different Mad Hatter appeared, claiming to be Jervis Tetch, but he was revealed as an impostor and subsequently disposed of once the real Tetch re-appeared.

Tetch was subsequently sent to Arkham Asylum. In his first appearance, the Mad Hatter attempted to steal a trophy from the Gotham Yacht Club, but was foiled by Batman while he tried to rob spectators from a high society horse show. He is an insane neuroscientist and developed hardware that can control the brain and induce hypnotic states, and often uses hats or other headgear for mind control.

As his criminal name indicates, he takes the appearance of the Mad Hatter from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Mad Hatter's top hat and attire was kept by Batman and displayed in the Batcave, as seen in Batman Beyond.Jervis Tetch, formerly a research scientist, is completely smitten with the works of Lewis Carroll. Using Tetch's technological expertise, they were able to discover that alien influences were somehow controlling Bruce Wayne, which eventually lead them to Brainiac. However, Superman (disguised as Batman) and Robin prevented the group from ever beginning their regime. When Batman had disappeared from Gotham, the Mad Hatter, the Riddler, and Bane planned a coalition to control Gotham City. In the nightmare of Barbara Gordon (infected by Scarecrow), he is appear on talk show for the subject of conflict between Jim Gordon and Batman (accused of murder for his daughter Barbara), he is with Scarface, Harley and Riddler. Apprehended once again, the Mad Hatter was returned to Arkham. However, in a fit of arrogance, his hat was destroyed and he lost control of his mindless minions.

When Batman and Nightwing arrived at the troupe's site to investigate further, he had controlled the troupe's human members as well. Dressed as a circus clown, he implanted mind control circuitry upon the animals of the troupe and had them perform robberies. In Animal Act, Mad Hatter infiltrated the Haley's Circus Tour, the circus troupe Dick Grayson participated in as a child. Mad Hatter was a brilliant scientist who got fired for experimenting with mind control technology, he soon became an enemy of Batman, in The New Batman Adventures, he appears in a few episodes.
